National or Universal healthcare is a system that many individuals desire and many citizens oppose. This system if implemented allows government to regulate and provide healthcare, much like our medicare system at present. As of far two republicans has been persuaded to vote for the bill and they are Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. This has been and will continue to be a controversial bill and many revisions has happened. Such revisions includes the Public option, and the baucus bill, which has not been written officially yet. It took many efforts for the democrats who are for it and republicans who are against it. Harry Reid has said about there struggle, "There isn't anything we could do to satisfy them in this
health care bill. Nothing ... They are so anti-competitive. Why? Because they make more money than any other business in America today. . . .What a sweet
deal they have."
Currently, universal Healthcare is a main focus in Washington D.C. The bill is being passed as fast as possible, as president Obama wishes it to be passed by the end of this year, but it is estimated that it will last until at least December because of the Veterans day and thanksgiving breaks occurring in November. The most recent developments are somewhat shocking to some and will be quite ordinary for some others. Page 19 of the plain text of the baucus bill offers this quote, "The Secretary and/or states would do the following: ... Enable customers to enroll in health care plans in local hospitals, schools, Departments of Motor
Vehicles, local Social Security offices, and other offices designated by the state.” An amendment is also being proposed by Chuck Schumer so as to omit antitrust exemption for ensurers. They are also compromising on several plans as a middle of the road type of deal such as adoptable systems which are determined by individual states. Also amongst the healthcare news, Harry Reid has to combine two bills in to one and that bill has to please congress in order to pass through it.
